Iago Herrerín “The Small Details Made All The Difference”
Athletic conceded two goals for the first time since Gaizka Garitano took over as manager when they fell 2-0 to Real Sociedad on Saturday. It was a disappointing defeat for the Lions who must now turn their attention to the next match. Goalkeeper Iago Herrerín spoke with Athletic TV after the game and said that it was the small details that made all the difference in the results.
“In the first half they had a little bit more intensity than us and that helped them. In the second half they didn’t do as well, but the weather was against us. Losing is hard and we lose because of the small details. They made the all the difference, for example, their first goals happened because we made a mistake.”
Herrerín went on to say that Athletic struggled to create anything going forward and that they had difficulty dealing with the heavy wind throughout the match. It was an uncomfortable game from start to finish although the Lions did better in the second half.
“We have caused little danger and because of that it was difficult for us. In the first half, with the wind against us, it was complicated and in the second half we didn’t take advantage of it. When we were playing better in the second half the wind was gusting. It came from all sides and it makes you feel exposed. Every long ball that they hit made us more uncomfortable.”
A win could have seen Athletic climb into 7th place in the La Liga, but instead they could end the weekend just two points clear of the relegation zone. Now the Basques must prepare for another difficult fixture as league leaders Barcelona will visit the San Mamés next Sunday.
