Aitor Elizegi And Rafa Alkorta Happy With The Signing Of Kenan Kodro
Athletic Club officially presented Kenan Kodro as the newest signing late Friday morning with the striker accompanied by President Aitor Elizegi and Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta. Elizegi spoke first making it clear that manager Gaizka Garitano wanted the 25-year-old in the team and wold go on to say that it will be hard for Athletic to lose the Basque Derby this weekend because of how well they’ve been playing as of late.
“Kenan Kodro is a reinforcement that both Rafa and Gaizka, and I as well, believe is very good and important. We want to finish the season 100% and the next few months will be important. Kenan is ready to compete and is sure to identify quickly with what Gaizka and Rafa understand about football. What is happening at Lezama and what is taking shape on the field it will be very hard for Real Sociedad to win. The demand is increasing a lot on a day-to-day basis. Intensity isn’t something that can be negotiated as long as our legs can stand. The strength of Athletic doesn’t reside only in the San Mamés, but it also moves throughout all Bizkaia and Euskal Herria. We don’t compare ourselves to others.”
Alkorta admitted that the club has been monitoring Kenan Kodro for a while now and trust in his experience to be able to succeed at the San Mamés. Everyone is happy that the transfer was finalized and the Sporting Director believes that the competition will be a very good thing for the squad as a whole.
“We have been aware of Kenan and we knew he was a good option and possibility. He has international experience and we thought he was an interesting option for us. We didn’t have many forwards. We are all very happy and we hope that Kenan does what he has to do when he puts on this shirt, fight. No one here takes an opportunity away from anyone else. I don’t see it that way. I think the competition is good for the squad. The fact that Meho Kodro was a great player for Real is certain, and it makes me especially excited to sign his son. Kenan has played for Osasuna in the Primera, other leagues, and is a Bosnian international. He has experience.”
Kodro has signed a contract with Athletic through 2022 that also contains an €80 million release clause. With Aritz Aduriz injured the 25-year-old will have the opportunity to earn minutes under Garitano, but will have to compete with Iñaki Williams and Gorka Guruzeta at the same time. Kodro joined his teammates later Thursday afternoon for his first training session and there is a chance that he could be called up for Saturday’s Basque Derby at the Anoeta.
