Athletic Club Sign Former Osasuna Striker Kenan Kodro
With just hours remaining on the last day of the January transfer window Athletic finalized their second signing of the month. The Basques announced the signing of Copenhagen striker Kenan Kodro for an undisclosed fee and he has penned a contract with the Lions through 2022 that also contains an €80 million release clause. Athletic were quick to make the transfer happen with news that Aritz Aduriz will miss another 4-5 weeks with a sprained knee.
Kodro is Bosnian and has played internationally for Bosnia and Herzegovina, although he was born and raised in Donosti. He began his development at Basque academy Antiguoko before joining Real Sociedad. The striker never reached the first team but moved to Osasuna in 2014 where he scored 15 goals in 88 games before leaving for Mainz three years later. Kodro was playing for Copenhagen, where he’s scored 6 goals in 18 games, before making the move to the San Mamés.
The extended absence of Aritz Aduriz made it necessary for Athletic to find another option at striker along with Iñaki Williams and Gorka Guruzeta. There were several players that the club could have pursued but sources that that Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta and manager Gaizka Garitano both agreed on Kodro who will join his new teammates soon and try to help the Zurigorri continue to climb the La Liga table.
