Raúl García And Mikel Rico Cleared To Play In The Basque Derby, Oscar De Marcos Suspended Due To Red Card
Saturday’s Basque Derby against Real Sociedad at the Anoeta will be a massive game. A win could see Athletic climb as high as 7th in the La Liga table, but dropping points would allow other clubs to gain ground on the Lions. Gaizka Garitano has been preparing the team all week for the clash and will have some reinforcements ready as well.
Raúl García and Mikel Rico have both been cleared to play this weekend. García has missed several weeks with a muscle injury but has been training normally since Friday. He could’ve been called up for last weekend’s clash with Real Betis but was left off the squad list out of precaution. Rico has been recovering from a ruptured tendon in his ankle and is finally back in the team and available to the coach if needed.
Unfortunately, Aritz Aduriz continues to train apart from the group as he is dealing with a knee sprain. He’s mostly done sprinting and running exercises and has rarely touched the ball. At this point the striker has been ruled out for Saturday’s match barring any unforeseen changes. Iñigo Lekue and Oihan Sancet are still recovery from their own injuries and both are right on track of where they should be at this time in the process.
Oscar De Marcos will also miss the Derby after being shown a red card in Sunday’s match. His one game suspension means that someone else will have to start in his place and Garitano will have several options to choose from such as Ibai Gómez, Markel Susaeta, and Raúl García. With De Marcos unavailable Bilbao Athletic’s Jesús Areso trained with the first team on Wednesday.
