Jon Sillero Sidelined With Fractured Foot
Jon Sillero has been an important player for Bilbao Athletic since being promoted to the team back in 2016. The 20-year-old has gotten better with each passing year and has already logged nearly 1,700 minutes this season as the starting right-back. Over the weekend he was asked to play as a center-back and did so with composure, but didn’t get to stay on the field very long as he suffered an injury taken off after just 31 minutes.
Already dealing with several injuries in the team, manager Aritz Solabarrieta will have to do without Sillero for a while now too. The Lezama product has been diagnosed with a fracture to the fifth metatarsal bone in his foot and will be undergoing surgery to repair the injury in the coming days the club announced. This week he’s been seen on crutches at Lezama according to El Correo which protects him from putting weight on the foot and making the injury worse.
Jesús Areso will have to assume the starting role in Sillero’s place and there are a lot of expectations on him. Athletic paid €350,000 to trigger Areso’s release clause at Osasuna back in 2017 and now he will have the chance to show what he is capable of doing while also enjoying significant playing time. Meanwhile, the returns of Iñigo Muñoz, who was dealing with muscle injury, and Asier Benito will be welcomed relief for Solabarrieta.
Sillero joins a list of other key players who are out with injuries which has complicated the season for Bilbao Athletic. Oihan Sancet and Iñigo Baqúe (ACL tears), Aitor Seguín, and Gorka Pérez are all sidelined while Oier Luengo was recently sent on loan to Amorebieta which leaves the manager with very few options at center-back. On Sunday the Katxorros will face another test as they welcome Leioa to Lezama and try to secure an important 3 points.
