Athletic Club Have No Intentions Of Selling Unai Nuñez Or Sending Him On Loan
Unai Nuñez loves Athletic Club, but he wants to play. With the Lions not competing in Europe this year, and the fantastic form of Yeray, the 21-year-old has only logged 794 minutes this season and it’s no surprise that he isn’t happy with his lack of playing time. Other clubs have already taken notice of the situation and have been trying to sign the defender during this month’s transfer window.
A recent report claimed that English clubs Cardiff, Crystal Palace, and Watford have all reached out to Athletic to express their desire in the Lezama product. Cardiff hoped to sign Nuñez on loan for the rest of the season with an option to buy in the summer while the other two were willing to do the same, but preferred to sign him outright now and were willing to offer a fee of €20 million. As expected, Athletic aren’t interested.
Javier Beltrán of AS has since reported that Athletic have no intentions of sending Nuñez away on loan and are even more opposed to the thought of selling the starlet. Manager Gaizka Garitano views Nuñez as an important player in the team as the third center-back and someone who could play a vital role in the years to come. As usual, the club refuse to negotiate and have referred all interested clubs to the defender’s €30 million release clause. Nuñez’s current contract runs through 2023.
It’s been a difficult season for Nuñez who understandably wants to play regular minutes and needs to at this important time in his career. That being said, he is one of the top young center-backs in Europe and Athletic will not let him leave for anything other than his release clause. The 21-year-old wants to succeed at his boyhood club, but there won’t be many chances for the rest of the season unless there is an injury in the team. That being said, if the Lions can qualify for Europe next season could be a completely different story.
Unai López is also waiting to find out what his future holds. The 23-year-old isn’t a part of Garitano’s plans this season and wants to return to Rayo Vallecano on loan. However, Athletic are unwilling to let him join a direct rival in the table at this time. Several clubs in the Segunda have expressed interest in López who has rejected the offers because he believes that he has already proven himself in the second division. For now it appears as though he will stay in the team for at least the rest of the season.
