Mikel San José “We Created Chances And Were The Better Team”
With Beñat suspended for Sunday’ game against Real Betis it was up to Mikel San José to start in his place. The 29-year-old was up for the challenge and played a great game as Athletic were able to take all three points in a thrilling 1-0 win at the San Mamés. After the match San José told reporters that he thought Athletic were the better team and admitted that he agreed with the referee’s decision to show Oscar De Marcos a red card.
“We created chances and were the better team. Betis handle the ball well, they are the best team at doing it along with Barcelona. They make you run a lot, but we came prepared. Other than the final minutes of the game we were very good. I think Oscar’s red card was fair, I probably would have sent him off too. The victories give us confidence. The team has been more solid and we are playing with much better organization.”
San José went on to highlight Athletic’s focus on organization and not taking any unnecessary risks as the reason why the Basques have been so much better under Gaizka Garitano. The team is playing great football while taking it one game at a time and their focus has already shifted to Saturday’s Basque Derby against Real Sociedad.
“We are more organized. We keep in our zones and we are taking fewer risks with the ball so we don’t expose ourselves. The situation we were in required this change and that’s what we are doing. We are more comfortable playing like this and we must continue on this path. We can’t relax because if we do we will go back down. It’s been a very even and competitive league. Our dynamic is better, although Real Sociedad have one more point than we do. Our focus is already on the next match.”
Athletic will have to play the Derby without Oscar De Marcos, who will be suspended for his red card, as well as Yuri Berchiche who was shown a yellow card that will also result in a suspension. Gaizka Garitano will have some difficult decision to make but Beñat will be available again. It’s going to be another challenging game for Athletic and a win could see the Lions climb as high as 7th in the La Liga table.
