Amorebieta 3-2 Bilbao Athletic: Gaizka Larrazabal’s Brace Not Enough As Kumeak Lose 4th Straight Road Game
Bilbao Athletic have been the picture of consistency since Aritz Solabarrieta became the manager following Gaizka Garitano’s promotion to the first team, although consistency isn’t a good thing in this case. The Katxorros have won every game at Lezama, but have also lost every game away from home. They had the chance to change that on Saturday when they traveled to Amorebieta, but it wouldn’t be an east challenge.
Gaizka Larrazabal gave Bilbao Athletic a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute when he finished off a pass from Asier Villalibre. The Katxorros were ahead, and deservedly so, but the hosts would respond quickly. Eleven minutes later Amorebieta were awarded a penalty which was converted by Iker Seguín. Then, just moments before halftime, the home side would get a second penalty. Athletic loanee Andoni Tascón stepped up and beat the keeper which put Bilbao Athletic behind 2-1 going into the break.
Just minutes into the second half Larrazabal would pull the game level with a strike inside the box. Bilbao Athletic had energy and momentum and looked like they would have chances to find the winner until Mario found the back of the next in the 76th minute. The Kumeak pushed forward looking to level the score again but the goal wouldn’t come. Amorebieta won 3-2 which handed Bilbao Athletic their fourth straight loss away from home.
Saturday’s loss puts Bilbao Athletic in a difficult situation as they could now fall as low as 10th in the league table. The goal is still qualifying for the promotional playoffs, but it’s going to be difficult. Aritz Solabarrieta will have his team back in action next Sunday when they will host Leioa at Lezama in what is already a must-win game.
