English Clubs Have Eyes On Unai Nuñez Who Could Reportedly Leave Athletic Club
Unai Nuñez was one of the revelations of last season, being promoted by then-coach Kuko Ziganda and playing significant minutes across three competitions. This year Yeray is healthy again which has heavily limited Nuñez’s appearances, as has not competing in Europe. The 21-year-old loves his boyhood club but is now considering leaving on loan in order to play regular football elsewhere.
Sergio Santos Chozas of AS has reported that three clubs from England have already contacted Athletic and expressed their interest in signing Nuñez. Cardiff want to sign Nuñez on loan for the rest of the season and then negotiate a transfer in the summer while Crystal Palace and Watford are willing to pay up to €20 million right now. They would also consider signing the defender on loan with an included option to purchase him in the summer transfer window.
Athletic Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta is aware of the offers and the fact that Nuñez is also interested in leaving on loan because he wants to play regular minutes. The Lezama graduate loves Athletic and has never considered an exit, but he’s not happy with his limited opportunities this season. A loan move would allow the center-back to enjoy consistent playing time, but Athletic have no interest in selling the starlet and are notorious for demanding the payment of release clauses for their players.
His current release clause is set at €30 million and there are only days left in the transfer window for any negotiations to take place over a potential loan. Athletic view Nuñez as a player who can be a vitally important player in the team but also recognize the 21-year-old’s need and desire to play more minutes at this point in his career.
