CD Basconia Flying Under Iban Fuentes With 4 Game Winning Streak
When Athletic made the decision to part ways with Eduardo Berizzo back in early December it sent ripples throughout Lezama. Gaizka Garitano was promoted from Bilbao Athletic which left a hole that would quickly be filled by CD Basconia’s Aritz Solabarrieta. Choosing someone to take the reins of Basconia was a difficult decision and the club eventually decided on Iban Fuentes.
At the time Fuentes was coaching Athletic’s Juvenil B team who were enjoying a very successful season. The Katxorros had only lost two games all year but taking control of Basconia, a professional team, was a giant step for Fuentes and one that he took with confidence and the belief that he could do the job well. It’s been just over a month since the managerial changes were made and, although it took some time to adjust, the decision looks to be a success.
Fuentes faced two difficult matches after becoming the new coach. Basconia first played Real Sociedad to a scoreless draw and then lost 2-0 on the road against Alavés. Things were rough at first but it didn’t take long for the players to find their rhythm under the manager and the team has now won four straight games which is their best run of the season.
The streak started with a 2-0 win at home against Beasain with Ruben Azcona and Aitor Paredes scoring the goals. Basconia made it two in a row on the road defeating Lagun Onak 2-1 with a brace from Ewan Urain. A second straight match away from home saw Urain net two more goals in a 2-1 win over Deusto. Saturday the team cruised to a 3-0 win over Somorrostro at home with Xabi Arberas, Oier Zarraga, and Gorka Agirre all finding the back of the net.
Throughout the winning streak Basconia have score 9 goals, conceding just twice, and have been playing excellent football. The team was not doing poorly under the leadership of Aritz Solabarrieta, but it’s clear that Fuentes is getting even more out of the players and helping them develop into better footballers at the same time. With an impressive winning streak in place they will now face tougher tests in the matches ahead.
On Sunday Basconia will travel to Sestao River who are currently second in the table before hosting league leaders Portugalete one week later. At the moment Basconia are just three points off of the promotional playoff zone of the standings and these next two games could decide their trajectory for the rest of the season. Regardless of what happens the players are putting in good performances and many are showing the signs that they will be ready to make the jump to Bilbao Athletic this summer.
