Athletic Club Will Pay Tribute To Markel Susaeta During Sunday’s Match At The San Mamés
Markel Susaeta has accomplished something that only four other Athletic players have done in their careers. Last Wednesday the 31-year-old made his 500th appearance for the club in a 1-0 win over Sevilla at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán. It was a historic moment and he was surprised at Lezama the following day when his teammates honored him with a large banner celebrating the achievement.
On Sunday Athletic will host Real Betis in what will be Susaeta’s first game at the San Mamés since playing his 500th match in the Zurigorri shirt. During the game the club, players, and fans will pay tribute to Susaeta who deserves the recognition and celebration.
A few Athletic legends will also be there to honor Susaeta according to Juanma Mallo of El Correo. José Ángel Iribar (614 appearances), Txetxu Rojo (541), and Joseba Etxeberria (514) are three of the four players that sit in front of Susaeta on the all-time appearances list for the club and will be in attendance. Andoni Iraola (510) will not be able to attend the tribute.
Markel Susaeta joined Lezama when he was just 9 years old and made his first team debut back on 2 September, 2007 in a match against Barcelona during which he also scored his first goal for the club. Over his 500 appearances he has scored a total of 54 goals and provided 88 assists. He’s already a living legend for Athletic Club and will be deservedly honored on Sunday at the San Mamés.
