Athletic’s focus has always been on Lezama and youth development. It’s the pillar of the club which makes it vitally important for the Basques to always be looking for young talented players to bring in. The unique player policy certainly limits the pool of players to choose from, but also helps scouting to be more specific, targeted, and intentional. Athletic are constantly watching players who could potentially join the club and have now set their sights on another target.

Javier Beltrán of El Correo has reported that Athletic are interested in signing Argentina U19 midfielder Gonzalo Desio. The 18-year-old is the son of Hermes Desio who played for Alavés, among other clubs, and Gonzalo was born in the Basque city of Vitoria in 1999 which means that he meets the qualifications to play for Athletic. He also has Basque heritage but spent almost his entire life growing up in Argentina where he currently plays for the youth team of Estudiantes de la Plata.

Athletic aren’t the only ones showing interest in Desio. Alavés are also keen on the midfielder who can play in many different roles and is known for his positional intelligence and ability to shoot the ball from outside the box. Desio featured for Argentina’s U19 team a few months ago in Barcelona and several clubs sent scouts to watch him in action. If Athletic were to sign the 18-year-old in the near future he would be expected to join Bilbao Athletic to continue developing.
