Athletic Femenino Will Host Atlético Madrid At The San Mamés In The Copa De La Reina
Athletic have been one of pioneers in Spain when it comes to growing and supporting women’s football. The club has always been very active in helping develop the game and have even created new youth teams for young ladies. During the Presidential elections last month the continued focus on growing women’s football was a major topic and eventual winner Aitor Elizegi had plenty to say about the subject
Elizegi stated on several occasions that if he became President he would look for ways for the Women’s team to play matches at the San Mamés and he has finally delivered on that promise. On Tuesday the club announced that Athletic Femenino will host Atlético Madrid at the San Mamés on Wednesday, 30 January in the first leg of the Copa de la Reina.
The announcement went on to state that the club will give more information in the coming days. The goal is to fill as man seats as possible at the San Mamés and for fans to support the Women’s team who will be looking to advance to the semifinals with a win over a very difficult opponent.
Athletic Femenino qualified for the quarterfinals with a challenging win over Real Betis. After going down 3-0 the Neskak mounted a second half comeback to finish even at 3-3 and go to penalties where they won 4-3. Now they will host Atlético Madrid, arguably the best team in the Liga Iberdrola, but the team will have the support of the San Mamés.
