Beñat Will Miss Match Against Real Betis Due To Yellow Card Suspension
Athletic’s 1-1 draw against Villarreal certainly felt like a loss. The team and fans believed that the Lions deserved more from the game, but instead they walk away with just one point. It was a disappointing night at Estadio Cerámica, but the result wasn’t the only bad news for the Basques who will now be without one of their key players for Sunday’s important game against Real Betis.
Midfielder Beñat was shown a yellow card in the 40th minute which was his 5th of the season. The booking means that he will have to serve a one game suspension, effectively ruling him out for the clash with Real Betis at the San Mamés this weekend. Beñat has played a vital role alongside Dani García in the center of the field and Gaizka Garitano will now have a difficult decision to make in replacing the 31-year-old.
Starting Mikel San José alongside Dani García is the most likely choice. He has played very well this season, especially under Garitano, and would provide strength and physicality in the midfield. San José is also dangerous from set pieces, but he isn’t the offensive creator that can immediately take the place of Beñat. For this reason Garitano could potentially turn to someone else and there are other options.
Although Unai López hasn’t played well this season he is a more offensive midfielder that Garitano could consider. Raúl García may also be cleared in time to play, although that doesn’t seem likely at this point. With Mikel Rico still injured the only other options would be Peru Nolaskoain and Ander Iturraspe, but right now all signs point to San José being trusted in place of Beñat who will be a big loss for Athletic.
