Dani García “We Go Home Sad And Annoyed, I Don’t Want To Get Into Any Controversy”
It’s hard not to talk about the refereeing decisions when discussing Athletic 1-1 draw against Villarreal. Not only did the Lions have the winning goal questionably ruled off by VAR, Villarreal’s equalizer also came about after a handball in the box. After the game Dani García told reporters that he thought Iñaki Williams’s goal should have stood and that the team deserved all three points.
“We played a great game but the point helps us little compared to what we could have had. We did a great job and for what they say it was a legal goal. We worked hard for a long time and we deserve to be climbing the table. We could have had 25 points to enjoy a happy and calm week, but now we can only looking to the game against Betis. You can already imagine how we are thinking. A victory would have given us a jump in the standings and some tranquility, but the cancellation of the goal forces us to stay more alert.”
Going into the game Athletic were aware that Villarreal is a strong team despite their place in the standings. García was happy to see the team creating chances but says that they are going home sad and frustrated at not taking the full three points after a strong performance at Estadio Cerámica.
“We know that Villarreal has a great team and that it was going to be a complicated match. We put ourselves ahead and the team played very well defensively. We had chances and created even more danger in the second half. It was difficult to score and we took a point. We go home sad and annoyed. I don’t want to get into any controversy. In football the most important thing is your head and we are more confident.”
The draw lifted Athletic to 13th in the La Liga table, but still just three points above the relegation zone. Now the team must turn their focus to Sunday’s important match against Real Betis at the San Mamés. Athletic have yet to lose a game under Gaizka Garitano but are in for yet another challenging match against a difficult opponent.
