Medical Update: Aritz Aduriz Continues To Miss Training With Knee Sprain, Raúl García Closer To A Return
Athletic seem to be turning the season around since the managerial change back on 4 December. Under Gaizka Garitano the team has won 5 games, drawn 2, and only lost one time. The Lions have secured 11 points out of a possible 15 in league play and could climb into the top half of the table with a win on Sunday against Villarreal and help from other matches over the weekend. The change has been outstanding, but it’s even more impressive when considering that a couple of key players have been unavailable.
The club released a medical update on all injured players early Saturday to explain where everyone is in their recovery process. Oihan Sancet, who underwent ACL surgery back in September, has now been recovering for four months without complication. Athletic revealed that he is seeing increased workloads, both in the amount of sessions and the intensity. He’s been at Lezama every day working individually and is right on schedule to return before the end of the season.
Mikel Rico is still recovering from his ruptured tendon and is only doing light recovery sessions. His workload will increase in the weeks to come. Meanwhile, Iñigo Lekue has been recovery well from his lower back surgery. It’s now been three weeks since the surgery and he’s begun to increase the level of his exercises to help his functional and physical rehabilitations.
Aritz Aduriz, who was originally diagnosed with a simple bruised knee, still hasn’t been able to return to training. Athletic revealed that he’s also suffering from a slight sprain in the same knee which has kept him sidelined. Out of precaution he will continue working apart from the team with a trainer until his recovery is complete. Raúl García is the closest to being cleared to play. After dealing with a muscle injury in his right leg he’s now been able to get on the field at Lezama and is working towards returning to full training soon.
Athletic have played well despite not having Aduriz or García available, but Garitano will be hoping to get them back as quickly as possible. Sunday’s match against Villarreal presents the team with the chance to win their third straight La Liga match and pick up 3 important points to climb higher up the table.
