Unai Vencedor Trains With The First Team, Oscar De Marcos Misses Out

Oscar De Marcos missed training on Thursday (MD)

Athletic returned from Sevilla early Thursday morning after their 1-0 win at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán. The players didn’t have much time to relax though as they were back training at Lezama at noon in a session that was open to the public. As is usually the case the starters from the previous night all did recovery work while the rest of the team held a full practice.

Raúl García, who has missed over a week with a muscle injury, did some recovery work with Xabi Clemente and is working his way back to being cleared to play. Aritz Aduriz, Mikel Rico, and Iñigo Lekue continued to miss training with various injuries as did Oscar De Marcos who started against Sevilla. So far Athletic have yet to give any update or explanation as to why the 29-year-old was absent.

Iñigo Vicente continued to train with the first team and there was another young face in the squad with midfielder Unai Vencedor also called for the day by Gaizka Garitano. Both players have promising careers ahead and the club wants them to be as close to the senior squad as possible. For now it doesn’t look as though either will actually be included in the team for Sunday’s match against Villarreal and they will likely start for Bilbao Athletic on Saturday against Gimnástica at Lezama.

The biggest part of the day on Thursday was the recognition of Markel Susaeta who made his 500th appearance for Athletic against Sevilla. The club surprised the Captain with a large banner at Lezama celebrating the achievement. Susaeta couldn’t hide his joy when the banner was revealed as he smiled, clapped, and thanked his teammates and everyone else at the club.
