Unai López Rejects Offer To Go On Loan To The Segunda
Gaizka Garitano has only been the Athletic first team manager since 4 December but it’s already clear that Unai López isn’t a part of his plans this season. The midfielder wants to play regular minutes and has even asked the club to let him leave on loan during the winter transfer window. López would love to return to Rayo Vallecano where he excelled last season, but that doesn’t look like it will be happening.
Javier Beltrán of AS reports that Athletic are unwilling to send López to Rayo because they would be strengthening a direct rival in the La Liga table. Rayo’s refusal to include starlet Sergio Moreno as part of the deal has also played a role in Athletic’s decision. Instead there are several clubs from the Segunda who have expressed interest in signing the 23-year-old such as Deportivo and Malaga as reported by Onda Cero Coruña.
Athletic have offered López the chance to return to the Segunda on loan for the rest of the season but the midfielder has refused. He believes that he has already proven himself in the second division and wants to compete in the Primera. At the same time, the 23-year-old continues to insist on a move to Rayo. If do not change their stance on refusing to let López go to Rayo, strengthening a rival, and he doesn’t get any other offers from La Liga he will stay with Athletic and continue working to gain the favor of Garitano.
López trained normally with his teammates on Monday and is hoping to be called up for Athletic’s Copa del Rey second leg against Sevilla on Wednesday. He has a contract through 2022 and has reiterated his desire to succeed at the San Mamés, but the Lezama product will need to play more minutes and gain the trust of the manager to be given a more important role within the team.
