Athletic Club’s Pursuit Of Fernando Llorente Put In Doubt After Harry Kane Injury
Athletic Club were hoping to announce the signing of Fernando Llorente this week and have already had Wednesday set aside as the day to present the forward as the newest player. Llorente asked Tottenham to facilitate his return to the San Mamés and the English club agreed which then led to negotiations. There was belief that a deal could be reached either today or tomorrow but that may not happen.
During Tottenham’s match against Manchester United on Sunday star striker Harry Kane had to be helped off the field with an ankle injury. At this point the club is still waiting to see how long he is expected to miss, but with Son Hueng-min leaving for the Asia Cup Tottenham will likely have no choice but to put Llorente into the starting lineup for the matches ahead.
The situation has now cast doubts over Tottenham’s willingness to part with Llorente and could mean that Athletic will have to wait until later in the month to finalize the transfer or perhaps until the summer. Tottenham are still open to negotiating a transfer but want to be compensated well for the striker now. This will certainly be a story to watch in the days to come as Athletic had already decided that signing Fernando Llorente was the biggest priority this month.
