Ibai Gómez “The Reception Was Amazing, The Fans Have Always Shown Me Their Love”

The most important thing to Ibai Gómez was Athletic’s victory over Sevilla (AC)

Ibai Gómez made his return debut for Athletic Club in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Sevilla and had high praise for the team after the final whistle. He told AthleticTV that the Lions are strong and are going to score goals this season. The support from the fans gave the team what they needed to take all three points, but he’s also aware that La Liga has been extremely competitive this year.

“Athletic is a very compact team and above all else we are always going to score goals. The San Mamés was spectacular and the support of the fans gave us a boost. The League is complicated because there are teams with great quality. If you leave spaces opponents will take advantage of it. We have to tighten up so that opponents can’t create opportunities and take advantage of mistakes. It will be difficult to come back [after the first leg defeated] but this victory gives us confidence. We are going to try to advance in the second leg.”

When asked about what manager Gaizka Garitano has asked him to do Gómez said it’s the same things that have been written in the papers. He’s just trying to play to his strengths like he did with Alavés and also praised teammate Iñaki Williams who scored Athletic’s two goals on Sunday.

“The Mister has asked me to do the things you have all put in the press…send crosses, give assists, smart touches, and finally hard work. Everything I did at Alavés is what brought me back here. I’m going to do what the boss asks of me and I have to continue working like I have been. I’m very happy for Iñaki. In the open field he’s a very dangerous player and his finishing today was spectacular.”

In closing the 29-year-old admitted that the reception he got from the Athletic fans was very special. He’s was happy to feel the love of the San Mamés once again and made it clear that the most important thing is the success of the team, not just one player.

“It was spectacular. The reception was amazing, I can’t express it in words. The fans have always shown me their love. I can only thank them, but the important thing was the victory of the team. We must seize this moment of happiness. I’m very well, very happy. I’m very happy to be here, but in this case the individual has very little importance.”

Sunday’s win saw Athletic move into 16th in the La Liga table, tied for 12th on 22 points. The Basques are now 3 points clear of the relegation zone and will have the opportunity to climb even higher in one week when they travel to face off with Villarreal at Estadio Cerámica.
