The Arrival Of Ibai Gómez, And Possibly Fernando Llorente, Could See Gorka Guruzeta Leave On Loan
Gorka Guruzeta is one of the most promising young players at Athletic Club. After a great season with Bilbao Athletic last year, in which he scored 18 goals, he was called up to train with the first team over the summer. It quickly became clear that the 22-year-old was going to earn a place in the squad and the Athletic refused to even listen to loan offers from clubs in the Segunda.
Fast-forward to today and Guruzeta is struggling for minutes. The striker has featured in just 5 games so far this season, starting two Copa del Rey matches but only playing 20 total minutes in La Liga. For a player his age who is still developing he needs to be on the field more if he is going to grow into the forward that the club believes he can be. That likely won’t happen at Athletic this season.
With the club’s purchase of Ibai Gómez, and possibly Fernando Llorente, the door could be opened to a possible exit for Guruzeta. Their arrivals will make it even harder for him to see the field and Radio Marca Bilbao have reported that several clubs in the Segunda have already reached out to Athletic. There is serious interest in the Lezama product and some clubs would be willing to guarantee playing time if they can sign Guruzeta on loan for the rest of the season.
The decision will ultimately be up to manager Gaizka Garitano who also coached Guruzeta at Bilbao Athletic last season. President Aitor Elizegi has regularly stated that the most important thing in regards to transfers is what Garitano says so he will be the deciding factor. If he believes Guruzeta will help the team this season the 22-year-old will likely stay put, but if he thinks it’s best for him to play regular minutes in the Segunda to develop then there is a good chance that Guruzeta could be sent on loan for the remainder of the season. There is interest from other clubs and a decision will need to be made.
