Athletic Club Officially Announce The Signing Of Ibai Gómez

Ibai Gomez

Ibai Gómez has returned to Athletic Club (FIFA)

Ibai Gómez is coming home and Athletic fans have been impatiently awaiting the announcement for the past week. On late Wednesday afternoon Athletic finally reached a transfer agreement with Alavés for a fee between €3.5 and €4 million to bring Gómez back to the San Mamés. All that was needed was for it to be made official and the wait is finally over.

Athletic officially announced the signing of Ibai Gómez on Thursday at noon with the player scheduled to have his medical later in the day. The 29-year-old has signed a contract through 2022 that does not contain a release clause and he will be formally presented on Friday at 9:00am at the Jose Iragorri press room at the San Mamés. He will wear the number 19 shirt.

Gómez was born and raised in Bilbao and has always supported Athletic, which he calls the club he loves. He trained at the youth academy at Santutxu before joining Sestao River in 2009. The following year he signed with Bilbao Athletic but was quickly promoted to the first team where he featured in 145 matches, scoring 17 goals. After struggling with injuries he left for Alavés in the summer of 2016 where he played the best football of his career and has now returned to Athletic.

Throughout the transfer process Ibai Gómez made it very clear that he wanted to leave Alavés the right way because the club was special to him and he enjoyed his time at the Mendizorrotza. He also announced the return to Athletic in a video posted on his social media that showed him walking through Vitoria while talking about his time at Alavés and thanking the club. At the end he put his Alavés shirt in a drawer at his own and pulled out an Athletic shirt saying “It’s time to go home.” Ibai Gómez is an Athletic Club player once again.
