Alex Remiro Expected To Join Huesca On Loan If He Signs A Contract Renewal With Athletic Club
In the midst of Alex Remiro’s ongoing contract drama it is easy to forget that he is ready to play in the Primera. The 23-year-old was the best goalkeeper in the second division last season and led Huesca to their first promotion in club history. When Kepa Arrizabalaga left for Chelsea over the summer many expected Remiro to get the starting role, but his refusal to negotiate an extension saw him relegated to the sidelines.
New President Aitor Elizegi has made it a serious point to try to fix the situation. He’s convinced Remiro to resume negotiations and the club would like for him to renew. In fact, sources close to the player say that he is eager to hear the new proposal and would love to stay at his boyhood club if the offer values him and the role he wants to earn in the team. His representatives have told Athletic that there is no agreement in place with any other club.
At the same time, Huesca want to bring him back to the club. They have already reached out to Athletic on several occasions in hopes to reaching a deal. The previous Board of Directors would not allow Remiro to leave, but the new Ibaigane is open to the idea if the goalkeeper signs a renewal first. Several sources in the Basque Country are already reporting that Remiro would join Huesca on loan for the remainder of the season if he agrees to an extension first. If he does not, then the club will now allow him to leave according to the reliable Jose Manuel Monje.
“The goal is to try to talk to him and his environment”, President Elizegi told Radio Marca on Thursday. “We have all the month of January to know what he wants. In any case, Alex is going to be our player from here until June and, regardless of what he decides, we should continue to respect a good understanding between a worker, an athlete, and the club especially if he considers that he still has a future at this club. You have to try.”
Athletic and Remiro have yet to hold talks over a new contract, but the negotiations are scheduled to take place. The club wants to renew the Lezama product who is also willing to continue his career at the the San Mamés if an agreement can be reached. Meanwhile, Huesca are still waiting for their answer with the club having made Remiro their top January transfer target. Alex Remiro is getting a second chance at his Athletic career, but nothing has been decided.
