Yuri Berchiche And Raúl García Ruled Out For Sevilla Clash With Ankle Injury And Muscle Discomfort

Yuri Berchiche

Yuri Berchiche won’t be able to play on Thursday due to a sprained ankle (AC)

Athletic are in the midst of playing 6 games in the span of 20 days. It’s a unique challenge that the Lions are facing and manager Gaizka Garitano will have to rotate his squad in a way that players can get rest while keeping the team competitive. On Thursday Sevilla will come to the San Mamés for the first leg of their Copa del Rey draw and Garitano will be without a few players.

Raúl García missed training on Wednesday, his fourth straight absence, and afterwards the club announced that the midfielder is dealing with muscle discomfort in a muscle in his lower right leg. More tests will come, but he is already ruled out for Thursday’s match. Likewise, Yuri Berchiche missed his second straight training with a sprained left ankle and his availability will be determined by how his body responds to treatment over the next few days.

Iñigo Lekue, who is recovering from back surgery, and Mikel Rico, ruptured tendon in his left leg, are both still unable to train with the team and will miss Thursday’s match as well. Luckily Iñaki Williams, Dani García, and Iñigo Córdoba were all able to return to training on Thursday and may be included in the squad for the match against Sevilla at the San Mamés.
