Unai López Will Return To Rayo Vallecano On Loan For The Remainder Of The Season
Unai López was a star for Rayo Vallecano last season. Standing out as one of the best midfielders in the Segunda, López helped lead the team to promotion while on loan from Athletic and played so well that he earned a new contract. The 23-year-old penned an extension through 2022 and was expected to play a significant role in the team at the beginning of the year.
Despite starting the first game of the season against Leganés, López quickly saw his chances diminish. He’s featured in just five games so far this year and, with several players in front of him, there isn’t really a chance for him to enjoy more regular minutes. Over the past few weeks Rayo Vallecano have contacted Athletic to express interest in signing the midfielder on loan again and an agreement is nearly complete.
López sees the chance to return to Rayo as a good move that will allow him to prove himself in the Primera and return to Athletic in the summer and fight for his place in the team. Sources have told Inside Athletic that and agreement between the two clubs is nearly complete with just minor details left to be decided. As long as things do not change, López will join Rayo on loan for the remainder of the season.
Throughout the negotiations it’s been believed that Athletic would negotiate a way to sign Rayo starlet Sergio Moreno in return for López. The 20-year-old striker has been on Athletic’s radar for over a year now, but Real Madrid hold the right to match any offer which complicates the potential transfer. Marcos de Vicente of Marca reports that Unai López and Sergio Moreno will be separate transfers if both moves do take place this month.
