Rafa Alkorta admits that the club will work on transfers this week

Rafa Alkorta is enjoying the Athletic Club life once again. The former player turned Sporting Director spoke to reporters late Monday night after arriving back in Bilbao with the team and praised Athletic’s ability to get an important win against Celta Vigo. He recognizes that the league will be difficult all season and is hopeful that the Lions can keep climbing the table.

“The team showed great solidity. Little by little we will play better, but the team has been solid and I liked that. The La Liga season will be long, but it’s like that for most teams. There are eight or nine teams that will be there fighting. Some of us are going to go from less to more, or I hope so, and others from more to less. We’re going to see a lot of teams close in this area of the table.”

Alkorta was quickly asked about Athletic’s interest in players, especially Ibai Gómez. He quickly admitted that the club is open to signing anyone who can play for the club and make the team better, but says that nothing has been finalized at this point. He does expect this to be a busy week.

“We are interested in Javi Martínez, Ibai, Ander Herrera, Llorente…We are interested in everyone. It’s clear that any player who can play at Athletic interests us and a player of Ibai’s quality interests us. Nothing is easy, but we are interested in having everyone here who can be. We have not made any movements yet. This Tuesday we will work and see what can be done. I just landed but this week we’ll get going.”

Sources already claim that Athletic have reached an agreement with Ibai Gómez and Alavés for a transfer, but minor details are still being worked out. It’s possible that the 29-year-old could return to the San Mamés sometime this week, but Rafa Alkorta has remained quiet on all possible deals. Meanwhile, Cristian Ganea and Unai López are both expected to leave on loan to Numancia and Rayo Vallecano respectively.
