Iñigo Vicente Trains With The First Team As Several Players Miss Tuesday’s Session At Lezama
Monday night’s match against Celta Vigo was very demanding. Athletic were pushed for the entire game and every player had individual battles on the field throughout the match. The team didn’t arrive back home from Vigo until after midnight and were back at Lezama at noon for training. It’s no surprise that several players were unable to practice and missed the session.
Yuri Berchiche and Iñigo Córdoba both missed the session, as did Raúl García who has now been absent from the last three trainings at Lezama. Athletic have yet to offer any medical report on the player. Iñaki Williams and Dani García started the day with their teammates, but left the field early. The were both substituted in the second half against Celta with muscle pain and the coaches are likely trying to make sure their issues don’t turn into anything more serious.
Of course, Iñigo Lekue and Mikel Rico also missed the session. Lekue is still recovering from back surgery while Rico was recently diagnosed with a ruptured tendon in his left leg. With so many players unavailable, manager Gaizka Garitano turned to the reserves and called up Iñigo Vicente who spent the day training with the first team. He did so during the summer as well under Eduardo Berizzo.
At this point it isn’t clear if Vicente will be called up to the team for Thursday’s Copa del Rey match against Sevilla at the San Mamés, but he does have a good chance. Athletic will play 6 game over 20 days, starting with Monday night’s win over Celta Vigo, so Garitano will have to rotate the team. He knows Vicente well from their time together at Bilbao Athletic and the 21-year-old has been playing fantastic football this season. There is a chance that he could make his debut very soon.
