Athletic Club Reach €4 Million Agreement With Alavés To Sign Ibai Gómez
Ibai Gómez is returning to Athletic. The winger left the San Mamés in the summer of 2016 after a long stint with injuries and signed with neighbors Alavés where he has played the best football of his career over the past two seasons. With his contract ending in June Alavés knew it would be very difficult to retain their star player and when Athletic came calling negotiations began.
Alavés offered a renewal to the 29-year-old who turned down the option in favor of returning to Athletic which is the club he has supported since he was a child. Sources have told Inside Athletic that the two clubs have already reached an agreement that will see Athletic pay roughly €4 million to sign Gómez. The club and player are still working on his contract which will run through the rest of the current season and for two or three addition years.
Despite his release clause being set at €10 million, Alavés did not want to lose the player for free in the summer and were willing to negotiate a lower fee with Athletic. Other clubs such as Real Sociedad, Celta Vigo, Leicester City, and Leeds had all shown interest in Gómez as well, but the player had no interest in going anywhere but Athletic.
With an agreement now in place Athletic are expected to announce the signing this week. The Basque giants hope to give Gómez his debut against Sevilla who will be Athletic’s opponent for three straight games. Ibai Gómez has never tried to hide his love for Athletic and returning to the club was a chance that the 29-year-old couldn’t turn down.
