Athletic finally got their first road win of the season when they beat Celta Vigo 2-1 on Monday night. Iker Muniain opened up the scoring in the first half and the relief was evident on the faces of the players. “When you’re down, winning away from home is important”, he told reporters. “The team did a great job and this victory gives us fresh air.”

Taking all three points saw Athletic climb out of the relegation and are currently tied with Leganés for 16th place in the La Liga table. “Hopefully this will give us a little more confidence moving forward”, Muniain continued. He then went on to dedicate the victory to the fans. “Winning is life. We dedicate this victory to all the fans who have been suffering. This win is for them.”

Muniain has been outspoken all year about how much work the team has put in on the training field and made it clear that everyone’s dedication should be recognized. Athletic had to change the way they played against Celta and it paid off in a big way with all three points.

“We must recognize all the work that the whole team has done. Today we had to counterattack Celta because they were the ones who pushed up with the ball. We were very safe and strong in defense. They had to take risks and we took advantage and turned those into attacks.”

Monday’s win was big, but Athletic must now shift their focus to the Copa del Rey with Sevilla visiting the San Mamés on Thursday in the first leg. Manager Gaizka Garitano has made it clear that the league it the top priority, but the Zurigorri have every intention of competing in every competition.
