Mikel Rico And Alex Remiro Return To Training At Lezama
It’s been nearly 2 months since Mikel Rico suffered an ankle injury in a friendly match against Deportivo. At the time there was fear of a fracture, but an MRI ruled that out and the 34-year-old was expected to make a quick recovery. That wasn’t the case, but things are finally starting to look more positive for the midfielder.
After training apart from the group for several weeks Rico was finally able to join his teammates during Thursday’s session at Lezama. He participated in almost every drills, including an intense small field scrimmage, and there is believe that he could be cleared to play in Monday night’s game against Celta Vigo at Balaídos. With the Lions set to play 6 games in 20 days Rico’s return could be a big deal for the team.
Alex Remiro was also able to train normally after missing a few weeks with lower back pain. The goalkeeper has been kept out of the squad for games all season due to a contract dispute but he has agreed to resume negotiations under new President Aitor Elizegi. Whether or not Remiro will actually choose to stay at the San Mamés remains to be seen.
Iñigo Lekue was the only player to miss Thursday’s training. The right-back recently underwent minimally invasive back surgery to repair a disc in the lumbar region of his spine and he is still going through recovery. Manager Gaizka Garitano will have nearly the entire squad to choose from against Celta, although Yeray and Raúl García will miss the game due to yellow card suspension.
