Aritz Aduriz Expected To Start On The Bench Against Celta Vigo
Aritz Aduriz has been playing his best football of the season since Gaizka Garitano took over the Athletic Club manager. The striker seems more comfortable in the system, deadlier in and around the box, and is finally scoring goals again. At 37-years-old the club shouldn’t have to rely on Aduriz so much, but that is still the case which makes January such a difficult month.
Starting with Monday night’s match at Balaídos, Athletic will play a total of 6 games in 20 days. It won’t be an easy challenge by any means and Garitano is already looking for ways to keep his players fresh. During Thursday’s training session at Lezama the manager worked with a specific starting lineup which is expected to be used against Celta Vigo, with Aduriz not among the eleven players.
No one should expect Aduriz to be able to start all six games and Garitano seems to be picking his battles. It now appears as though the striker will start on the bench against Celta where he would be able to contribute in the second half if needed. Athletic will then play three straight games against Sevilla, two of which are Copa del Rey fixtures, and Aduriz could return to the lineup in one of those matches.
Iñaki Williams featured as the striker in Thursday’s training session in place of Aduriz with Iñigo Córdoba and Markel Susaeta on the wings. Iker Muniain was in the midfield in place of suspended Raúl García while Dani García and Beñat made up the double pivot in front of the defense. Ander Capa and Yuri Berchiche were at the fullback positions with Unai Nuñez and Iñigo Martinez paired up in the center of the defense due to Yeray’s suspension. Iago Herrerín was once again the goalkeeper and this is expected to be the starting lineup used on Monday night at Balaídos.
