Ibai Gómez must choose between Alavés and Athletic Club (MD)

Athletic Club want to bring Ibai Gómez back to the San Mamés. The 29-year-old has played the best football of his career since joining Alavés in 2016 and, with his contract expiring at the end of the season, his future is up in the air. New Athletic President Aitor Elizegi has said on numerous occasions that he would love to see the winger return to Bilbao and it could finally happen with the winter transfer window now open.

Over the past few months it looked certain that Gómez was not going to be renewing his contract with Alavés. Although he has grown to love the club, they cannot afford his deserved wages and it seemed like just a matter of time before he left the Mendizorrotza. Recent reports claimed that Alavés did not want to lose their star player for free in the summer and were willing to sell him this month for far less than his €10 million release clause, somewhere around €4 million.

Athletic are reportedly ready to offer Gómez a contract for the remainder of this season and three additional years, but Alavés are still holding out hope that they will be able to retain their star. According to an exclusive report from Iñigo Crespo of El CorreoAlavés began negotiations with Gómez around Christmas and have offered him a three year extension. El Glorioso are aware that it will be extremely difficult to negotiate a renewal with so much interest from other clubs.

A decision will likely have to be made soon. If Gómez doesn’t want to renew with Alavés then the club plans to sell him in January to avoid losing him for free in the summer. Interested teams want to sign him this month. Athletic have yet to hold talks with Alavés but the two clubs could be in contact in the days to come. Ibai Gómez must choose whether to stay at the club he’s come to love or return to the club he’s support since he was a child. Athletic are hopeful that he will decide to come back to the San Mamés.
