Unai Simón Named One Of UEFA’s Top 50 Young Players To Watch In 2019
It sure has been a crazy year for Unai Simón. The goalkeeper was called up to train with the first team over the summer, signed a contract renewal through 2023, was sent on loan to Elche, and was brought back before ever playing a single game. Kepa Arrizabalaga had left for Chelsea, Alex Remiro was locked in a contract dispute, and Iago Herrerín was injured. Simón was trusted to start the first game of the season, making his debut at the San Mamés.
The debut couldn’t have gone much better for the 21-year-old who made a few amazing saves and helped Athletic take all three points against Leganés. He continued as the starter until Herrerín returned from injury and played well in every game. So far this season he’s made 9 starts and has even become a regular in Spain’s U21 starting lineup on the international level.
Simón has been a star in the making for quite some time and others are finally starting to take notice. On Wednesday the Lezama graduate was named in UEFA’s list of the Top 50 Young Players To Watch In 2019. It was certainly an honor for the goalkeeper who is still trying to battle Herrerín for the starting role, but he if he continues to play well he will get chances this year. He is already the club’s Copa del Rey goalkeeper and will be back in action when the Lions face Sevilla in the Round of 16.
With the way that he carries himself, his fantastic performances, and his devotion to the club it’s no surprise that Simón has already won over the hearts of the Athletic fans. There is no denying that he is definitely one of the best young players in Europe and should be watched closely this year as he seeks to earn a most consistent role in Gaizka Garitano’s team.
