Athletic Club Make Markel Susaeta And Alex Remiro Renewals Top Priority
New Athletic Club Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta has a lot of work to do. Not only will he have to navigate his first transfer window just days after taking his role, he also has seven players on expiring contracts that will need to be sorted out. Alkorta must work quickly.
According to a report from Javier Beltrán of AS, Athletic have made the renewals of Markel Susaeta and Alex Remiro the top priority. Susaeta has been with Athletic since he was 13 years old and a renewal should be simple and straight forward. Remiro’s situation is much more difficult.
According to former President Josu Urrutia, Remiro refused to negotiate a new contract and rumors suggest that he has been in talks with Real Sociedad. Aitor Elizegi is determined to get to the bottom of the situation and has already met with the goalkeeper at least once. He is hoping to convince Remiro to reconsider his future at Athletic and sign a renewal.
Aritz Aduriz is also a priority but his situation is the same as it has been for several years now. If the striker believes that he can play another season and wants to do so he will sign another one-year extension. His future is in his own hands.
Meanwhile, there are four others who could be on their way out of the club. Manager Gaizka Garitano is counting on Mikel Rico, but the midfielder’s age and recent injury struggles could keep Athletic from offering a renewal. Ander Iturraspe is also in a tough situation. The 30-year-old has barely played over the last few years and unless something changes he could be leaving his boyhood club in June.
Lastly, Sabin Merino and Xabi Etxeita are both on loan and it’s highly unlikely that either player is offered a renewal. Merino has struggled to play regular minutes at Leganés and Etxeita, although playing well with Huesca, has too many other defenders in front of him at Athletic. Rafa Alkorta has some difficult decisions to make and will consult manager Gaizka Garitano before moving forward with anything.
