Athletic Club And Alavés Set To Negotiate €3 Million Transfer Of Ibai Gómez
New Athletic President Aitor Elizegi has not been shy about his desire for Ibai Gómez to return to the club. During his campaign he stated that, “I would love for Ibai to come back” and has since taken it even further saying that the club “Needs him”. In a recent interview with El Correo Elizegi said that everyone has missed having Gómez at the club and hinted that he will try to sign the Alavés star in January, but also admitted that the two clubs have yet to speak.
An exclusive report from Javier Ortiz De Lazcano of El Correo confirms that a deal is getting closer. Although the two clubs haven’t actually begun negotiations at this point, they are both aware that talks will happen with €3 million being the proposed transfer fee. Gómez currently has a release clause of €10 million, but Alavés are willing to sell for much less to ensure that they get something in return instead of seeing the winger leave for free in the summer when his contract expires.
Athletic are said to have offered Gómez a contract for the rest of this season and three additional years. The 29-year-old is certainly interested in returning to the club that he has always loved and supported despite interest from elsewhere. So far Real Sociedad, Celta Vigo, Leicester, Leeds, Sporting, and Eibar have all reached out to the player but Gómez is only interested in returning to Athletic or staying at Alavés.
It’s no secret that Alavés would love to keep their star winger, but it just seems extremely unlikely with the club unable to afford Gómez’s desired and deserved wages. President Elizegi and his sports team headed up by Ricardo Hernani and Rafa Alkorta will soon begin negotiating with Alavés and there is a very good chance that Ibai Gómez could return to the San Mamés in the January transfer window.
Ibai Gómez left Athletic in the summer of 2016 to join Alavés on a free transfer. Since then the winger has grown as a football and leader, becoming one of the most dangerous forwards in La Liga. He’s been playing the best football of his career over the last two years and would provide an immediate boost of quality and experience in the Athletic squad if a deal is made. Manager Gaizka Garitano has already given his approval for the club to pursue a deal and negotiations with Alavés are expected to start soon.
