Aitor Elizegi Wins The Athletic Club Presidential Election By 85 Votes

Aitor Elizegi

Aitor Elizegi is the new President of Athletic Club de Bilbao (AC)

The campaigns and interviews are finally over. On Thursday the polls officially opened for Socios to vote for the next Athletic President and the results are in. Aitor Elizegi has been voted in as the new President of Athletic Club de Bilbao.

Roughly 46% of Socios showed up to the polls on Thursday with 19,060 official votes being cast. As the official counting took place Alberto Uribe-Echevarría held an early, yet small, lead over his opponent. During the second half of counting Elizegi took control of the election winning by just 80 votes. Uribe-Echevarría then asked for a recount at some of the tables holding ballots which was carried out without the numbers changing very much at all.

Athletic finally announced around midnight that Aitor Elizegi had won the elections with  9,264 votes which was just 85 more than Alberto Uribe-Echevarría’s 9,179 votes. Elizegi then exited Ibaigane and addressed the public while also leaving the door open for some members of Uribe-Echevarría’s team to join his own Board of Directors. Starting tomorrow morning, Aitor Elizegi will be the acting President of Athletic Club de Bilbao.

  • HI James, urte berri on 🙂 One thing on the latest podcast that has me confused (and apologies if this has been covered elsewhere on the site), but why doesn’t Elizegi have access to the big pot of money that the previous board built up? What’s the deal there? Who’s money is it, and where has it gone? (Has it gone?)
