Aitor Elizegi is the new President of Athletic Club. The famous chef won Thursday’s election by only 85 votes, edging out former club accountant Alberto Uribe-Echevarría. Throughout the entire process Elizegi has been viewed as the face of change and when he address the public at Ibaigane following the announcement he stated that the Socios believe in his project.

“The day of the election is an Athletic party. I think the Socios have voted for change. They have voted firmly, they have voted with hope on 27 December. I told you that I had a group behind me. I like to be demanded and I thank you for each vote and each endorsement. We are strong to move forward. Athletic is going to be able to keep going and today that is shown again. The Socios continue to believe in this project. If I make changes you know how to call me to correct me.”

Elizegi wanted to personally thank everyone who voted for him and said that he was sad to see only 46% of Socios show up to vote, but he understands the difficulties. He admitted that he admires former President Josu Urrutia and that he could never erase what he has accomplished since 2011.

“Today there were 20,000 votes that were all very important. I missed the other 23,000 Socios, but it was a difficult day for many to come out. The two sides have had a lot of equality and we will not stop defending the club at any time. I have also admired Josu Urrutia as President. He is a legend. In some decisions I have agreed with him and in others I have disagreed, but I cannot erase his memory as President or as a player.”

The new President did not shy away from the fact that the January transfer window will be opening in just a few days. He admitted that the team is in a difficult place and that his Sporting team will analyze any potential signings that can be made. If there are any possible and needed moves the Board of Directors will work to make them happen.

“In a sporting aspect we arrive in the middle of the season, but we are very well accompanied. Tomorrow we will share data and information about the first team and Lezama. The only objective is Athletic in a good place at the end of the season and I would trade all the votes for an impeccable Athletic. The vision of Alkorta, Manolo Delgado, and Suances, along with the coaches from the first team, will tell us what signings there should be. If the signings are viable and if the time is right the decisions will be carried out by a trained team from a commission that we all have confidence in.”

In closing Elizegi firmly stated that he believes in his team but that it will take much more than his Board of Directors to achieve good things. He’s asked all Socios and fans to show support to the team and help him lead the club in the right direction. He also alluded to possibly recruiting some members of Uribe-Echevarría’s team because he sees many others who could accomplish great things for Athletic together.

“I think there is a lot of quality in both teams and people who can do a lot for Athletic. Soon they will once again be defending the colors from within because this club never stops defending. The Board of Directors are here to help at a specific moment with all our strength, but we are discovering people who can contribute like some of those in Uribe-Echevarría’s candidacy. There are a lot of people who are worth it in this room. I have a group of 16 brilliant people. They are the best, but I don’t think that between just the 17 members we will be able to take the club forward. I invite you all to be a part of this project. I invite you all to be part of this project and I ask for your help, advice, affection, and respect.”

Aitor Elizegi has dreamed of being the President of Athletic Club for many years and has been preparing his candidacy since 2011. When the candidates first step forwarded Alberto Uribe-Echevarría was believed to be the favorite to win the election, but Elizegi won over the voters with his plans for the Grada de Animación, Lezama, and focus on the social aspects of the club. He will now assume the office of Athletic Club President and begin his tenure on Friday morning.
