Yeray And Raúl García Suspended For Next Match
Saturday’s draw against Real Valladolid wasn’t the desired result for Athletic. The Basques were in control for the entire game until surrendering a stoppage time equalizer which saw them come away with just one point. It was enough for Athletic to climb out of the relegation zone, but the Lions certainly feel as though the deserved more from the match.
The squad will now have some time to regroup during the Holidays as they won’t play again until 7 January when they travel to Balaídos to take on Celta Vigo. Gaizka Garitano will have to make the trip without two key players as Yeray and Raúl García will both miss the game due to suspension after picking up their 5th yellow cards of the season against Real Valladolid.
With Yeray unavailable Unai Nuñez would be expected to take his place in the starting lineup. Both center-backs have been playing at a high level this season which means that the change shouldn’t really hurt the team. Replacing Raúl García will be much more difficult. Iker Muniain could return to the midfield or Garitano could elect to hand minutes to someone like Unai López.
As things stand right now Athletic are free of the relegation zone. The draw against Real Valladolid saw the Basques overtake Villarreal for 17th in the table and they will be looking to move even higher over the Holidays with a much-needed win over Celta Vigo. Garitano has made it clear that the only goal right now is to win games and that hasn’t changed.
