Iñigo Lekue Will Undergo Surgery To Repair Lumbar Disc, Mikel Rico And Alex Remiro Still Unable To Train
It’s been a difficult year for Iñigo Lekue. The right-back suffered a fractured ankle at the end of August and was forced to undergo surgery which sidelined him for two months. After returning to training in late October he played his first minutes of the season in a friendly against Deportivo but has yet to even be called up for a single official match. Now things have taken another bad turn.
On Friday afternoon Athletic announced that Lekue has been struggling with a Discopathy – a disease to the disc or herniated disc – in the lumbar region of his spine. The 25-year-old has tried to train through the pain but will now undergo minimally invasive surgery to repair the issue. After the procedure is complete the club will give an update on his condition and more information on when he will be able to return.
At the same time Mikel Rico still hasn’t been able to resume training at Lezama since injuring his left ankle in the November friendly against Deportivo. The midfielder wasn’t expected to miss much time but has now been sidelined for over a month. Athletic’s medical report stated that Rico is still recovering from tendinitis and has shown “slight improvement in recent days”. If all goes well, the 34-year-old will begin the next stage in his recovery next week.
Lastly, Alex Remiro hasn’t been able to train over the past few days due to pain in his lower back. The medical report states that he is undergoing physical therapy and has made improvements. The goalkeeper could return to training soon if he continues to show positive signs of recovery. All three players have been ruled out for Athletic Club’s match against Real Valladolid which will take place on Saturday at the San Mamés.
