Athletic Club Have Reportedly Offered Rayo Vallecano Starlet Sergio Moreno A Four Year Contract
Athletic’s interest in Rayo Vallecano forward Sergio Moreno continues to grow. The 19-year-old, who was born in Pamplona, is the jewel of Rayo’s academy. He dazzled with the Juvenil A team last year before being promoted to the reserves over the summer. This year he’s split time between Rayo B and the first team and even made his La Liga debut against Atlético Madrid back in late August. Athletic tried to sign the starlet over the summer, which did not work out, and are now hoping to secure the transfer in the January window.
According to an exclusive report from Javier Ortiz de Lazcano of El Correo, Athletic have offered Moreno a contract for the remainder of the season and three more years, as well as the opportunity to train with the first team during the next preseason. If the transfer does take place the 19-year-old would spend the rest of the year with Bilbao Athletic. However, completing a deal will be extremely complicated due to the fact that Real Madrid have the right of first refusal on Sergio Moreno as part of the agreement to send Raúl de Tomas to Rayo Vallecano.
Rayo Vallecano are said to be willing to work out a transfer as they also have their sights set on Athletic midfielder Unai López who spent last season on loan with Los Franjirrojos and helped guide the team to promotion. With Gorka Elustondo being lost for the season with an ACL injury Rayo are desperate to bring back López on loan in January which could help facilitate a deal between the two clubs.
Athletic are in no hurry to finalize a transfer despite Rayo’s desire to close a deal as soon as possible. The Management Committee wants the issue to be decided by whoever is voted in as the new club President on 27 December. Regardless, Athletic’s interest in Sergio Moreno is serious and the club wants to bring the striker to Bilbao as they see him as someone with the potential to become an important player at the San Mamés.
Sergio Moreno was born in Pamplona, but grew up in Madrid. He began his youth development with Alcalá before moving to Atlético Madrid. The forward then made the switch to Tenerife before finally ending up at Rayo Vallecano where he was converted from a winger to a striker. Signing Moreno won’t be easy, but Rayo’s hopes of acquiring Unai López certainly makes it more possible. If the 19-year-old does make the move to Athletic it would give the club another young goalscorer to challenge for a place in the first team in the years to come.
