Aritz Solabarrieta Happy With First Win As Bilbao Athletic Manager
New Bilbao Athletic manager Aritz Solabarrieta picked up his first win on Saturday as the Katxorros mounted a comeback to beat Calahorra 3-2 at Lezama. The victory saw the team move to within three points of the promotional playoff zone of the table and the coach told reporters after the match that they have to continue building on what Gaizka Garitano was doing before being promoted to the first team.
“With Gaizka this team did very well and we hope to continue on this path. The way you play is the least important thing. We have players with the potential to play in different ways. Competition and training is part of growth. The competition puts us where we are and we hope to be as high in the table as possible. Although, when training the reserve team, you have to be looking further ahead.”
Solabarrieta highlighted the fact that the team has surrendered five goals in his first two games as manager which he sees as a problem. He defended goalkeeper Hodei Oleaga, who was caught off of his line for the first goal of the game, but said that they must work to continue getting better.
“So far we have conceded five goals and we know that we need to train hard and improve in all aspects. Yes, Oleaga made a mistake but it’s normal and it happens. We have good and intelligent players who know when they have played better. This will be good to make him a better goalkeeper than he already is. Asier Benito is doing better after recovering from his bad sprain. The other day he played for a while and now today too. The more players available the better.”
Bilbao Athletic will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to take on Real Unión who will be another difficult opponent despite the fact that they only have three wins this season. Like Garitano, Solabarrieta understands that developing young players is the priority at Bilbao Athletic, but this team also has the quality to make a run at the promotional playoffs for a second straight season.
