Rayo Vallecano Sporting Director David Cobeño “I’m Not Going To Hide Our Interest In Unai López”
Unai López impressed during his loan spell with Rayo Vallecano last season. The midfielder was one of the best players in the Segunda as helped the club earn promotion and was rewarded by Athletic with a contract extension over the summer. López continued to play well during the preseason and was expected to have a major role in the team this year. However, that hasn’t really happened and now Rayo are hoping to bring him back.
So far this season the 23-year-old has only featured in five matches, making just three starts. He’s been linked with a return to Rayo Vallecano who are interested in signing him again on loan in January and the club’s Sporting Director, David Cobeño, spoke openly about that desire in a recent interview with Onda Cero.
“It’s a very complicated market”, he said. “It’s difficult to get it right and you have to try to refine the squad and sign players who will improve the team. I’m not going to hide our interest in Unai López.” Cobeño knows that López could be a difference maker for the team because of his familiarity with the club. “He was an important piece for us. He was perfectly adapted and he would be a very important signing. The elections at Athletic make it a key moment.”
López has always shown flashes of brilliance but has yet to establish himself as a Primera player. Athletic are still hopeful that the Lezama product will live up to his potential and perhaps another loan, where he would play regular minutes, could be beneficial. In the meantime, Unai López worked with the starters in Saturday’s training session leaving many to believe that he will be in the lineup on Monday night against Alavés.
