Gaizka Garitano Tests Starting Lineup In Training With Unai López At Playmaker
Monday night’s match against Alavés will be Gaizka Garitano’s biggest test yet as Athletic Club manager. The team has won the first two games under the new coach and a win at the Mendizorrotza could see the Lions climb out of the relegation zone. It will be a difficult game for Athletic and Garitano has been hard at work preparing the team for the challenge.
Garitano has made it clear in recent comments that the only thing he is concerned with is winning games. He has already made some changes to the team, such as not starting Iker Muniain, and could have even more surprises in the lineup on Monday. Saturday’s training session at Lezama was open to the public and fans got to watch as Unai López worked with the starting eleven.
Just because the manager uses a specific lineup in training doesn’t mean it will be the same during the game. That being said, it is interesting and something to keep an eye on going into Monday night. The defense consisted of Oscar De Marcos, Unai Nuñez, Iñigo Martinez, and Mikel Balenziaga with Dani García and Beñat in the midfield. Iñigo Córdoba and Markel Susaeta flanked Aritz Aduriz and Unai López functioned as the playmaker linking the midfield and forwards.
If this is the lineup that stars on Monday it would be a big decision by Garitano. Yeray, Yuri Berchiche, Iker Muniain, Iñaki Williams, and Raúl García would be on the bench during kickoff, but that remains to be seen. Regardless of who starts, Athletic need to take all three points to keep climbing up the table. The Zurigorri have been playing great football under Garitano so far and fans hope to see that continue in the Basque Derby.
