Ibai Gómez Doesn’t Hide His Feelings For Athletic Club But Is Committed To Alavés Ahead Of Monday’s Basque Derby
The January transfer window opens in just a few weeks and Ibai Gómez is one of the players that everyone is talking about in Bilbao. The Alavés winger is playing the best football of his career and is one of Athletic’s top targets as the Lions are reportedly lining up a €4 million move for the 29-year-old. All of this makes Monday’s match even more interesting.
Athletic will travel to the Mendizorrotza on Monday night to take on Alavés in what promises to be a thrilling Basque Derby. When discussing the match with the media, Gómez anticipated being asked about his ties to Athletic. “I had doubts if you were going to ask any other questions before this one, but I see that it’s the first one”, he responded to one reporter’s inquiry. “It’s your job and I respect it very much, I’m married to a journalist.” The winger wanted to make it clear that his commitment to Alavés should never be questioned.
“I won’t talk about my future yet. The most important thing in these cases, and even more with a week like this, is the team and the club. We have to put aside this issue and focus on the collective and the precious game on Monday. That is the future. I’ve matured, not only on the field, but off of it as well. I think I’ve shown that every day I work 200% for the team and, obviously, for myself. That’s been my only mentality from the first day until the last. I’m focused on the club and the team is getting better. Anyone that thinks otherwise is wrong.”
Gómez has never been shy about his love for Athletic and didn’t hide from it when talking to the media. He says that he always wants the best for Athletic, but he’s an Alavés player now and is only thinking about winning Monday’s Basque Derby.
“I’ve never hidden my feelings, I’ve always been honest. I was born in Bilbao, my family have supported Athletic all of my life. I’ve always been Athletic and I’m always going to wish the best for Athletic. I hope that after Monday they go on to win every game, except for the second match against us. But since joining Deportivo Alavés, and the main thing is to be a professional, I consider myself more of an Alavesista.”
When finally turning the attention to the actual game Gómez admitted that he thinks it will be an tight contest. He emphasized the improvement that Athletic have made under new manager Gaizka Garitano, but believes that Alavés can take all three points at home.
“I believe, and I expect, that it will be an even game between two rivals. We’ve already seen that Gaizka’s Athletic, playing from the top and on the wings, not so much through the middle, are a dangerous team. They are coming here to the death because three points would be vital for them. I imagine that the victory against Girona has given them confidence. But we are the only team, along with Atlético, who have not lost at home and we have to keep trusting because I think we are capable of getting three points on Monday.”
