Aritz Solabarrieta Admits Bilbao Athletic Were Not Comfortable In 3-1 Loss To Sporting
Aritz Solabarrieta faced a difficult test over the weekend as he coached his first game for Bilbao Athletic against a very strong Sporting side. Despite taking an early 1-0 lead through an Antonio Salado goal, the Katxorros were not able to hold off their hosts as they fell 3-1 in Gijón. After the game the new manager admitted that it wasn’t a good result and that his team struggled to find a rhythm in the match.
“We won’t deny it, it is a bitter defeat. It’s true that we took control of the scoreboard early, but at no time have we been comfortable. At first we didn’t know how to interpret the game, the spacing, and everything wen’t very fast. It was a difficult game. We never had that sense of control and that is something that we have to work on. There was space behind the defense that we weren’t able to take advantage of. We tried to play the ball short, but it hurt us in several phases of the game.”
The 35-year-old manager recognizes that he is leading a very young squad in Spain’s third division. “This is a different team that last year”, he told reporters. “The team is younger, but a very good team”. Solabarrieta will have another opportunity to pick up his first win as Bilbao Athletic’s manager on Saturday as the Katxorros host Calahorra at Lezama.
