Cristian Ganea and Gorka Guruzeta Return To Training Ahead Of Clash With Girona
Gaizka Garitano will coach his first La Liga match for Athletic on Monday night against Girona at the San Mamés. The new manager has been tasked with guiding the club out of the relegation zone, but it won’t be easy. The first league game will have some added pressure as a few key players won’t be available. Thankfully, Garitano got some positive news going into the weekend.
Cristian Ganea was able to return to training on Friday just a few days after suffering bruised ribs against Levante. The Romanian was in danger of missing Monday’s match which, with Yuri Berchiche suspended and Mikel Balenziaga injured, would have left Garitano without any available left-backs. There is hope that Ganea will be cleared to play against Girona.
Gorka Guruzeta also returned to training on Friday after missing Wednesday’s session due to muscle discomfort. The young forward was left out of the squad for the Copa Del Rey match against Huesca and now looks to be available to the manager. After enjoying a successful season under Garitano at Bilbao Athletic last year – scoring 18 goals – fans are hoping that Guruzeta will be given the chance to play a more important role in the first team now.
Along with Berchiche and Balenziaga, Garitano will also be without Iñigo Martinez and Peru Nolaskoain who are suspended, as well as Mikel Rico who still hasn’t been able to return to training due to an ankle injury. The manager has already made it clear that Yeray and Unai Nuñez will start together in defense and that he trusts every single player in the squad. Athletic desperately need to take all three points against Girona and that pressure has been put on the shoulders of Gaizka Garitano.
