Aritz Aduriz “It’s Been A Tough Week, Probably The Hardest Of My Career”
Winning the first game under new manager Gaizka Garitano was a big deal for Athletic. The team has severely underperformed this season and the club’s decision to make a coaching change was met with relief and hope from the fans. For the players, it’s been a difficult week. The loss on Monday night to Levante was the nail in the coffin for Eduardo Berizzo who was dismissed the following day and the squad has felt the immense pressure to turn the season around.
“It’s been a tough week, probably the hardest of my career”, Aritz Aduriz told Gol TV after the 4-0 win over Huesca. The striker was referencing the fact that the team has had to adjust quickly to life under Garitano after Berizzo’s dismissal, but also carrying the weight of being in the relegation zone. He wants to see the team continue to play well after Thursday’s victory. “It’s been a very tough week, this has to be a turning point for us.”
Aduriz scored the first two goals for Athletic as the team felt the joy of a comfortable win that was absolutely necessary in their first game under Garitano. It was a great night for the Lions, but also a special occasion for the striker. With his brace Aduriz has now pulled level with Panizo for seventh on the club’s all-time scoring list with 169 goals.
The 37-year-old is now chasing Arieta (170) and could also surpass Iraragorri (179) before the end of the season. If he continues playing he could have a shot at reaching the likes of Gorostiza (196), Dani (199), and maybe even Bata (208) but it would be difficult at his age. The mythical Telmo Zarra reigns supreme with 335 career goals for Athletic Club.
