Since announcing their campaigns for Athletic Club President, Alberto Uribe-Echevarría and Aitor Elizegi have been working to obtain the necessary signatures to formalize their candidacies. Potential candidates are required to collect signatures of support from at least 5% of voting eligible Socios – roughly 2,060 – by the deadline of 7 December. Uribe-Echevarría has completed the task.

Uribe-Echevarría and his team arrived at Ibaigane on Friday just after noon to submit their signatures of support. “It is an experience that I have never experienced before”, said the club’s former Accountant. “I am impressed by the support of the Socios and our collaborators. I want to thank everyone who has helped us gather some 3,300 signatures and we will deliver more this afternoon.”

The candidate then went on to say that he will put all of his effort into leading the club if he is wins the Presidency. He recognizes that Athletic is in a difficult moment but believes that he can bring stability and is motivated by the support he’s received.

“I want to send a message of unity. I will try to put Athletic at the top and in that is where I will put all my efforts. Although this is not an easy time at Athletic, this is precisely when we need to have unity. The past statistics do not ensure any results. We are excited and we will not lose any endorsements from the people that have supported us. I am motivated by the affection of the Socios who have encouraged me on the street.”

When Uribe-Echevarría visited Ibaigane on Friday he was accompanied by the other 13 members of his team carrying the boxes of signatures. However, he has also revealed that at least three others will be joining his Board – José Ramón Garai, the current manager of the Fronton Bizkaia and former Director of Sports for the Basque Government; Unai Arzubiaga, an accounting and finance professor at the University of the Basque Country; and Carlos Ortiz Robles, a former financial director of Athletic.

The specific roles within Uribe-Echevarría’s Board have also begun to take shape. Javier Aldazabal will serve as the Vice President with Silvia Muriel the secondary Vice President. Izaskun Larrieta, who also served under Josu Urrutia, will be the Accountant. As has been previously reported, Genar Andrinúa will hold the role of Sporting Consultant to the President.

In the meantime, Aitor Elizegi must still submit his own signatures by the end of the day for his candidacy to be formalized. The famous chef and businessman has told reporters that he has collected the necessary amount and will visit Ibaigane later this afternoon to turn them in. If that does happen, both candidates will be formally presented on 12 December and voting will take place on 27 December.
