Iñaki Williams warms up before the match against Huesca (LaLiga)

Iñaki Williams scored two goals in the second half of Thursday’s Copa del Rey match against Huesca to help lead Athletic to a 4-0 win at El Alcoraz. With the Lions advancing to the Round of 16 the forward told reporters after the game that he hopes the victory will help the team wake up. The players are aware of their situation in the La Liga table and the concern it has caused among fans.

“We hope that this win helps us wake up. We are aware of the danger in being this far down the table and the uncertainty that it creates for the fans. But we have a new coach who will try to help us get out of the situation that we are in. The noticeable change is in our placements on the field. With Toto we attacked and defended in one way and with Gaizka we are attacking and defending with more order and we aren’t man marking so much.”

Athletic came into Thursday’s second leg with a 4-0 lead which helped take the pressure off of new manager Gaizka Garitano. Still, Williams said that the goal was to keep a clean sheet. He also highlighted the fact that he and Aritz Aduriz were able to score braces which he says will help their confidence and, as a result, the team as a whole.

“One of the main goals was keeping a clean sheet. We gave our opponents very little. We are aware that we had it somewhat easy, but we still wanted to play well. We defended in a 4-4-2 to be organized. It’s important for the forwards to score; to see the goal and help the team. That gives us confidence. I scored twice tonight and Aduriz had two as well, but I would give them both for one against Girona. You give me that and a clean sheet and I’d sign up for it right now. We are now looking ahead to Monday. The goal is to add three points and have positive sensations.”

Garitano’s appointment has been met with hope and excitement from the Athletic fans, but the players were very close to Eduardo Berizzo.”It was a very hard moment that you feel responsible for”. Williams told reporters. “He had to leave because the team hasn’t been up to the task. Toto is a great person, it was a shame.” It will now be up to Garitano to lead the Zurigorri out of the relegation zone of the La Liga table.
