Markel Susaeta Passes Piru Gainza For 5th Most Appearances For Athletic Club With 495
Monday night’s 3-0 loss to Levante was the darkest point yet for Athletic Club. Not only are the Lions now firmly planted in the relegation, the club officially announced the firing of Eduardo Berizzo on Tuesday. Despite the result and aftermath, it was still a special night for one player, although it certainly won’t feel like it at the moment.
Markel Susaeta made history in the 50th minute when he came on for injured Cristian Ganea. The 30-year-old made his 495th appearance for Athletic, passing Peru Gainza for 5th all time in the history of the club. He is the youngest player ever to reach this milestone for Athletic and could move even further up the list as he is now within striking distance of Andoni Iraola (510) and Joseba Etxeberria (514).
Susaeta was born in Eibar and joined Lezama back in 1997 at just nine years old. He made his first team debut on 2 September, 2007 against Barcelona and scored his first goal in the same game. Since then he’s gone on to establish himself as one of the best players in recent history, becoming Captain, and could soon move as high as third in total appearances for Athletic Club.
